What are Dragon Boats?
A Dragon Boat is a human powered watercraft which originated in China. The sport of dragon boat racing dates back 2000+ years throughout southern China. The ornate boats play an important role during religious ceremonies and festivals throughout China to this day.
Dragon Boat Racing
Dragon boating is a fast, fun and furious team based paddling sport. Racing involves boats that seat either 10 or 20 paddlers in a crew, with a drummer on the front and a Sweep or Steerer (someone who steers) at the rear. The team of paddlers work in unison to propel the boat forward from a standing start, the aim being to reach the finish line in the fastest time.
You may have even heard the drums (beating to keep the paddlers rhythm) echoing across Sydney Harbour. It’s an uplifting sound which instantly evokes a feeling of strength, pride, courage and teamwork.
Across the world today thousands of paddlers, young and old, compete in various events from local social races to huge international regattas. Timing, strength and endurance are 3 key elements of a successful team; the fourth and most critical is teamwork. It is for this reason that the sport has achieved such a high profile around the world.
