Summer holidays are a great time for kids to explore new things, find new adventures and make new friends.

Most kids jump at the idea of trying something new, however some say ‘I can’t’ or prefer to watch from the sidelines. If your child is one to be a little nervous about trying new things, here are some tips;

Reminders: Reminding your child that they are brave and safe are small but powerful words for the confidence. If they are scared of trying out swimming for the first time, remind them that they can ride their balance bike. If they can do one thing there’s no reason they can’t do it again.
Get involved: The best way to encourage your child is to try new things along with them. Start with easy going activities where parents can easily join in, then progress to small programs and before you know it, they will be counting down the days to go off solo on a summer camp.
Mix it up: Some kids simply just don’t know what they like yet. Mix it up and open up the possibilities. Try a whole range of experiences like music, sport, craft or science and let them decide what’s next. Allow them to browse schoolholidayprograms.com.au in search of their next adventure.
Adventure diary: Keeping a list or diary of all their new adventures and hobbies will encourage them to continue and will make them feel proud of all their achievements.

Just remember to support and praise your kids on their new experiences and as they grow older, let go of the leash a little.
